Unfortunately, we were unable to access juvenile arrest data broken down by race and gender for 2010 in time for the publication of this report. As such, we will rely on 2008 and 2009 Chicago Police Department (CPD) data to illustrate the demographic breakdown of juvenile arrests. Below is information about juvenile arrests by age, gender and race. Eighty-four percent (84%) of juveniles 16 or under arrested in 2009 were male and sixteen percent (16%) were female.
According to the Chicago Police Department, in 2008, 69.2% of juveniles arrested were fifteen and sixteen years old. Fourteen year olds, the next largest group, accounted for 17.6% of juvenile arrests.
In 2008, whites accounted for 3.5% of all juvenile arrests, Hispanics accounted for 18%, and African Americans accounted for 78.1% (Chicago Police Department, 2009).
